Gestational Diabetes
Also known as: GDM
What it actually is
Diagnosed via oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) at 24–28 weeks. Affects ~14% of Pakistani pregnancies — much higher than 5–7% globally. Increases risk of large baby, c-section, and future diabetes for both mother and child.
Why it matters for Pakistanis
Diet alone manages 70–80% of GDM cases. The rest may need insulin. Critical: track post-meal sugars, avoid sugar/refined carbs, walk after every meal, get adequate protein.
