PCOS
Also known as: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, Polycystic Ovary Disease, PCOD
What it actually is
PCOS is diagnosed when a woman has any 2 of: irregular or absent periods, signs of high androgens (acne, facial hair, hair loss), or polycystic ovaries on ultrasound. Up to 70% of women with PCOS have insulin resistance, regardless of body weight. Diet and lifestyle interventions improve symptoms in 70–80% of women.
Why it matters for Pakistanis
Pakistan has one of the world's highest PCOS prevalence rates. Most Pakistani women are underdiagnosed and given generic 'lose weight' advice. The real fix is insulin-targeted nutrition: protein-first, low-GI, anti-inflammatory.
